Tractor bracket manufacturing

A tractor bracket lives in vibration, dust and impact for thousands of hours. It is usually a pressed part with a weld-on boss or a formed section, and the durability comes from material choice, weld quality and coating, in that order.

Three facts that decide this page

  • Brackets for farm equipment are pressed on tooling built in-house, with PPAP and first article inspection available where the programme requires it.
  • Ganesh supplies Mahindra's farm equipment business and holds their Annual Commodity Award for sheet metal in the Farm Division.
  • Coating on a bracket is a corrosion and a fatigue decision: a poor phosphate layer under powder is where field rust starts.

Part requirements

A tractor bracket lives in vibration, dust and impact for thousands of hours. It is usually a pressed part with a weld-on boss or a formed section, and the durability comes from material choice, weld quality and coating, in that order. The table below is the working specification; the customer drawing always takes precedence where the two differ.

Process route

Material. CRCA 2.5–6 mm. Control: Grade to drawing, IS 513.

Process. Press blank, pierce, form; weld where specified. Control: Fixture for welded variants.

Hole tolerance. ±0.2 mm. Control: Gauge check.

Coating. Powder 60–80 µm over seven-tank pretreatment. Control: Salt spray scope agreed.

What the drawing should state

Material grade and thickness, the tolerance on every functional feature, the finish and colour, masking requirements, weld size or symbol where relevant, the inspection level, and the packing method. Where a standard applies, name it and the revision. Three missing items on a drawing cause most quotation errors: material grade, finish specification and annual quantity.

Common failure modes

Field failures on brackets are fatigue cracks at a weld toe, elongation of a hole that was under-sized for the bolt, and rust starting at an edge where the coating was thin. The first two are design and weld-quality issues; the third is pretreatment.

What drives the cost

At volume the press and tool dominate; at low volume the laser and brake do. Welded variants add fixture and weld time, and the coating line adds a fixed handling cost per batch.

Vibration, not static load, sizes the bracket

A tractor bracket that holds a 30 kg component statically may still crack in the field, because the load is repeated millions of times and amplified by the chassis. The design levers are a generous radius at the change of section, a weld that ends away from a stress concentration, and a material thickness that keeps strain low. Changing from 3 mm to 4 mm often helps less than moving a weld toe 10 mm away from a corner.

Holes, bolts and joint slip

A bolted joint on a vibrating machine will slip if the clamp load is lost, and the hole will elongate. That is a joint design problem: the bolt size, the grip length, the washer face and whether the hole is plain or should be a slot for adjustment. Powder coating under a bolt head is a common cause of lost preload, so masked faces on clamped joints are a specification item, not a detail.

Coating as a durability item

On farm equipment the coating is exposed to mud, slurry, UV and washdown. Seven-tank pretreatment with a phosphate conversion and a powder topcoat is the baseline; where the environment is aggressive, a primer system or a galvanised substrate is worth the cost. A bracket that rusts at a cut edge after one season is almost always a preparation problem, not a powder problem.

What to change first

If brackets are cracking, look at the weld detail and the radius before the material. If holes are elongating, look at the joint. If they are rusting, look at the edge preparation and the masking. Each has a different fix and a different cost, and none of them is solved by asking the supplier for a thicker part.

What to send for a quotation

Send the bracket drawing with material, thickness, hole and slot tolerances, weld symbols, coating and masking, the annual quantity and the release pattern, plus any PPAP or first article requirement. If the bracket is a carry-over part, send the current supplier drawing and one sample so the interface dimensions can be verified before tooling is discussed.

Quality evidence

Ganesh operates under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, with an independent inspection function, material traceability to mill certificates and in-process inspection records. First article inspection reports and PPAP documentation are available where the programme requires them.
