Data centre rack rail manufacturing

A mounting rail is a tolerance part. The U-height pitch, the hole pattern and the squareness of the rail decide whether a server slides in at the top of the rack as easily as at the bottom.

Three facts that decide this page

  • 19-inch rails are punched to the EIA-310 hole pattern with a pitch of 44.45 mm, and the pitch is inspected over the full rail length rather than at two points.
  • Rails are formed from 1.5–2.0 mm CRCA or 2.0 mm stainless where load or corrosion demands it, then coated with the thread and mounting faces masked.
  • Squareness and hole position are checked against a gauge before coating, because coating build changes a tight fit.

Part requirements

A mounting rail is a tolerance part. The U-height pitch, the hole pattern and the squareness of the rail decide whether a server slides in at the top of the rack as easily as at the bottom. The table below is the working specification; the customer drawing always takes precedence where the two differ.

Process route

Hole pitch. 44.45 mm (1U). Control: Cumulative check over rail length.

Hole pattern. EIA-310 19-inch. Control: Gauge plate.

Rail length. Per rack height. Control: ±0.5 mm.

Coating. Powder 60–80 µm, masked faces. Control: DFT and fit check.

What the drawing should state

Material grade and thickness, the tolerance on every functional feature, the finish and colour, masking requirements, weld size or symbol where relevant, the inspection level, and the packing method. Where a standard applies, name it and the revision. Three missing items on a drawing cause most quotation errors: material grade, finish specification and annual quantity.

Common failure modes

A rail fails a customer audit for three reasons: cumulative hole pitch drift along the length, a hole pattern that is not the EIA-310 pattern, and coating build on the mounting face. All three are inspection issues that a gauge catches before dispatch.

What drives the cost

Rails are high-volume, low-material parts, so punching or laser time and coating handling dominate. Tooling for the hole pattern pays back quickly because the pattern is standard across rack heights.

Pitch, not hole position, is the specification

A rail can have every hole within ±0.2 mm of its nominal position and still fail, because the cumulative pitch over 42U is what decides whether the last server fits. The EIA-310 pattern uses a 44.45 mm pitch with a repeating three-hole group. Inspecting two holes catches almost nothing; inspecting the pitch over the full length catches the drift that comes from a stretched nest or a worn punch.

The load path runs through the rail

Rack load ratings are usually quoted for the cabinet, but the equipment hangs on the rails. Rail gauge, material thickness, the number of fixing points to the post and the way the rail is supported at mid-height all decide the real capacity. A 2.0 mm rail on four fixings behaves differently from a 1.5 mm rail on two. If a customer is installing dense compute, the rail drawing should state the load per pair and the fixing pattern, not just the U height.

Earthing continuity and coating

Racks are bonded, and powder is an insulator. Where the rail is part of the earthing path, the fixing faces, the earthing stud area and the contact points to the post must be masked and the continuity checked. This is a masking instruction on the drawing before it is an inspection step, and it is the item most often missing from a rack rail RFQ.

When a standard rail is the wrong answer

If the rack carries non-standard equipment, a deep chassis or a load beyond the standard rail rating, the answer is a designed rail with a stated load and fixing pattern, not a longer standard rail. Ganesh quotes rails from the customer drawing, so the load case belongs on the drawing rather than in an email.

What to send for a quotation

Send the rail drawing with the U height, hole pattern, pitch tolerance, material and thickness, the load per pair if it is non-standard, the coating and masking, the fixing pattern to the post, and the annual quantity. If the rail is part of a bonded path, say so, because the masking and the continuity check change the process.

Quality evidence

Ganesh operates under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, with an independent inspection function, material traceability to mill certificates and in-process inspection records. First article inspection reports and PPAP documentation are available where the programme requires them.
