What goes in the pack
A laser cutting RFQ needs three things: the geometry (DXF), the specification (material, thickness, tolerance, finish) and the commercial picture (quantity per release, annual volume, delivery). Any one of the three missing means the quote is provisional.
DXF conventions that matter
- One closed contour per part, with holes and cut-outs as separate closed contours.
- No duplicate or overlapping entities. Duplicate lines cut twice and burn the edge.
- No open ends, splines that have not been exploded, or text converted to geometry inside the cut path.
- The part outline on its own layer, and any engraving or marking on a different layer.
- Units stated in the drawing, not assumed from the DXF header.
- One part per file unless you are sending a nest, and the nest labelled with its sheet size.
Drawing conventions that matter
- Material grade and standard, not just "MS".
- Nominal thickness, plus the tolerance if the part is thickness-critical.
- Which edges are cosmetic and which are weld prep.
- The general tolerance standard (ISO 2768-m is common) and any tighter feature tolerance.
- Finish: bare, deburred, primed, powder coated, with RAL and DFT.
- Revision number that matches the PDF and the 3D model.
What happens after you send it
The file goes to nesting, the drawing goes through a manufacturability review, and anything that will cut badly or cost more than it should comes back in writing before quotation. If a contour is open, we will not guess the gap: we will send it back, because a guessed contour is a scrapped part.
The checklist
- DXF at the current revision, units stated
- One closed contour per part, holes as separate closed contours
- No duplicate, overlapping or open entities
- Material grade and standard named (IS 513, IS 2062, ASTM A240, ASTM B209)
- Nominal thickness, and thickness tolerance if critical
- General tolerance standard and any tighter feature tolerance
- Cosmetic edges and weld-prep edges identified
- Deburring requirement stated
- Finish, RAL and DFT stated where coated
- Quantity per release and annual volume
- Delivery location and packing requirement
- Revision number matching PDF and STEP
